Kirby Krogstad is an Assistant Professor of dairy nutrition in the department of Animal Sciences here at CFAES Wooster. Kirby has deep roots in the dairy industry as he was raised on dairy farms in Minnesota and South Dakota. He received his bachelor's degree form South Dakota State, and his master's from the University of Nebraska. Prior to joining OSU faculty he was a graduate student at Michigan State University, receiving his PhD. Kirby joined OSU faculty and the Wooster campus a little over a year ago, in January of 2024. His research focuses on how nutrition can positively impact milk production, efficiency and overall health of dairy cattle. Kirby and his team are currently focusing on the effects carbohydrates can have on the stomachs of dairy cattle. The team investigates changes in rumen tissue structure and signals within rumen tissue in association with different carbohydrates. The team is then investigating the correlation these changes in carbohydrates might have on inflammation. They’re goal is to utilize their research to create on farm solutions in support of the dairy production industry. Kirby and his team are heavily involved within the dairy community of Ohio, providing extension and outreach. How has OSU/your career impacted your life?: OSU has been a great start to my career! I've made great friends and have gained mentors here. I am looking forward to getting to know the community even better and to serve Ohio citizens.
Tell us about your family/pets: My wife and I have been married for 3 years and have a dog name Oliver.
What is your hometown?: Baltic, SD
What is something you would like to learn?: I want to learn how to make cows healthy for as long as possible!
What is your favorite restaurant or food?: My favorite food is my wife's chicken alfredo.
What is a talent or superpower you wish you had?: I wish I had the ability to hit every golf shot perfectly straight!
Where is your favorite place to vacation?: Mine and my wife's favorite trip was to Scotland.
