Graduate Student Spotlight: Mauricio Oliveira

OliveiraName: Mauricio Xavier Oliveira

Title and Department: PhD Candidate, Department of Animal Sciences

Describe your work:  My research investigates how mastitis—an inflammation of the mammary gland—impairs the development of mammary tissue in dairy heifers. Given that milk production plays a critical role in global nutrition, ensuring the health of the mammary gland is vital for both animal welfare and industry efficiency. By identifying developmental bottlenecks caused by mastitis, my work aims to develop strategies that optimize mammary growth, enhance dairy productivity, and contribute to more sustainable milk production practices.

How long have you been with OSU? I have been pursuing my Ph.D. at OSU since 2021 and anticipate graduating in the summer of 2025.

Tell us about your family/pets: Most of my family is in Brazil, while part of my extended family is in Mississippi. Here in Wooster, I live with my husband, Kirk, and our two cats, Bael and Asmo

What is your hometown? I was born and raised in Itaberaba, a small town in the state of Bahia, Brazil.

What is something you would like to learn? I would love to learn how to communicate scientific research more effectively to the general public. Throughout my training, I have become proficient in discussing research with fellow scientists, but I want to refine my ability to engage broader audiences. Finding ways to simplify complex scientific information and present it in an engaging way is essential, particularly as misinformation can spread easily. I’m especially interested in strategies that make science more accessible and help connect research to real-world applications.

What is your favorite restaurant or food? In Wooster, my favorite restaurant is City Square Steakhouse. For a taste of Brazil, I also highly recommend Batuqui, a Brazilian restaurant in the Cleveland area. Oliveira 2

What is a talent or superpower you wish you had? Probably telepathy! Growing up, I loved the X-Men movies, and Professor Xavier’s ability to communicate without words was always the most fascinating to me. Where is your favorite place to vacation? My favorite vacation destination is Chapada Diamantina in Brazil, a breathtaking region filled with stunning landscapes and unique natural beauty.
