Student Spotlight: Carolyn Lee

Carolyn LeeName, title, and department: Carolyn Lee, PhD candidate and Center for Food Animal Health

Describe your work: My research interests include novel therapeutic development as it applies to emerging and zoonotic infectious diseases. Much of my research is performed in the BSL3 PAAR facility on campus. My research areas include SARS-CoV-2, African Swine Fever Virus, and most recently, highly pathogenic avian influenza in dairy cattle.

How long have you been with OSU? I joined OSU in 2018 for the Summer Research Internship Program (ORIP), before starting my PhD in January 2021.

Tell us about your family/pets: Most of my family is located in Northeast Ohio. I don't have any pets of my own right now, but I will have a dog (and probably a horse) after I graduate.

What is your hometown? I grew up about 35 minutes from Wooster in Wadsworth, Ohio, so Wooster has always been familiar to me. I moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming for 2 years after undergrad, but Ohio drew me back home.

What is something you would like to learn? Someday, I would like to learn how to fly an airplane. The feeling of flying is so freeing, and the views from the sky are AMAZING!

What is your favorite restaurant or food? Asian Wok in Wooster is my go-to comfort food. Fun fact: I have been ordering chicken chop suey since 2016, so they always know my order when I walk in.

What is talent or superpower you wish you had? It's cliché, but I would love to be able to teleport! Being in grad school doesn't leave much time to travel, so it would be amazing to be able to get places quickly.

What is your favorite place to vacation? My family always traveled to the Outer Banks, North Carolina every summer growing up, so it always feels special when I get to travel back there.
